Prostate Gland Problems

Prostate problems are the most common clinically diagnosed medical disorder in American males today. The three most common prostate problems are:

  • Infection (prostatitis)
  • enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH)
  • prostate cancer

While most men have prostate changes that are not cancer, nearly all men over the age of 50 have enlarged prostates, many of whom suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. It is not linked to cancer and does not raise your chances of getting prostate cancer, yet the symptoms for BPH and prostate cancer can be similar.

The prostate gland surrounds the urethra (the tube that passes urine). As a normal part of aging, the prostate enlarges and can press against the bladder and the urethra. The prostate starts out about the size of a walnut. By the time a man is 40, it may have grown to the size of an apricot. By age 60, it may be the size of a lemon. This can slow down or block urine flow. Some men might find it hard to start a urine stream, even though they feel the need to go. Once the urine stream has started, it may be hard to stop. Other men may feel like they need to pass urine all the time, or are awakened during sleep with the sudden need to pass urine. Early BPH symptoms take many years to become bothersome and problematic, or it may never turn into a problem.

Symptoms can include:

  • Trouble starting a urine stream or making more than a dribble
  • Passing urine often, especially at night
  • Feeling that the bladder has not fully emptied
  • A strong or sudden urge to pass urine
  • Weak or slow urine stream
  • Stopping and starting again several times while passing urine

If you have these symptoms—or should your symptoms change over time—you should see your doctor. Abnormal findings from any prostate change tests can help diagnose a problem and suggest the next steps to take:

Since BPH can not be cured, the options for treatment have been 1) do nothing, 2) take drugs and endure their side effects, and 3) surgery (including its possible side effects and recovery time). There is however another, new option—Natur-Leaf ®. Two key ingredients in the all-natural supplement Natur-Leaf ® have been clinically proven to reduce prostate enlargement and provide much-needed relief for sufferers of BPH: Pygeum africanum, an African bark that reduces swollen prostate tissue, and beta-sitosterol, a plant sterol that improves urinary function and decreases other uncomfortable symptoms.
