The diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is complicated by the fact that symptoms of the disorder are many, varied, and often indicators of other diseases and conditions as well. For this reason, the diagnosis is often considered exclusionary. That is, it is considered to be the diagnosis when other conditions and causes have been excluded.
There have been many attempts to standardize the diagnosis of CFS. The one most often employed is the 1994 Fukada criteria as defined by the Center for Disease Control. Under these guidelines, the primary symptom is an incapacitating exhaustion that is not improved by rest, not explained by other medical causes, and has lasted at least six months from first onset.
In addition, that exhaustion must be accompanied by at least four of the following eight symptoms. There might be impairment of concentration and short-term memory, sore throat, muscle pain, joint pain, tenderness in the lymph nodes, headaches different from those previously experienced, an inability to gain benefits from adequate sleep, and fatigue for 24 hours or more following non-strenuous exertion. It's easy to see that these symptoms can have a profound effect on the sufferer's quality of life.
Though the cause of CFS is not definitively known, malfunction of the immune system seems to be implicated. Building and strengthening the immune system, therefore, may help relieve many of these symptoms. Natur-Leaf® is a nutritional supplement that makes available nutrients naturally present in plants that are used as "building blocks" in the immune system. These plant sterols are not easily accessed through diet alone, and only Natur-Leaf®'s proprietary method of processing can obtain them without damaging their effectiveness. Natur-Leaf® has been available in the U.S. since 1999 and shows great promise in the treatment of CFS symptoms.
